the winery

At the winery, managed today by Maria Poggi Azzali and her daughter Chiara, expertise and research are flanked side by side to transform the grapes from the winery’s vineyards into wines which combine tradition and innovation.

    Our products

Our products are directly tied to the Val Tidone and its territory: it is from here that we derive the prime materials for our wines, it is here in the winery’s cellars that the wines are processed and produced, with minimal intervention, maintaining their genuiness and character.

As a result we have a carefully selected offering of still wines - Malvasia, Gutturnio, Barbera, Collare Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon DOC – flanked by the historic sparkling wines of our territory  - Gutturnio and Ortrugo – which have always been a source of great pride for our winery.

To complete our list of products we offer spumante, sweet wines, blends and a selection of grappas.

    The cellar

The grapes, grown in the winery’s own vineyards, are brought into the cellar no later than 2 hours after being harvested, and are immediately crushed and pressed.

The white grapes are still integral when they are put into the press equipped with a pneumatic lung, to obtain a soft pressing.

The red grapes are separated from the stems, crushed and stored in special wine producing vats, which are large steel containers that help in the subsequent processing.

The working cellar (capacity of approx. 5,000 hectolitres) has several refrigerated steel vats, where the first alcoholic fermentation of the white must takes place at carefully controlled temperatures.

The wine is left to settle In these steel vats before bottling.

The musts which are used to form the cuvée of the sparkling wines are preserved in special steel vats at 0º C.

The perlage of the sparking wines results from the natural fermentation of the cuvée in pressure resistant steel vats, where carbon dioxide, formed by the transformation of the natural sugars into alcohol, remains dissolved in the wine, resulting in froth.

At this stage the wines are filtered and bottled using isobaric bottling equipment.

Exclusively new bottles are used, which are rinsed on the inside before being filled, and on the outside before labelling.

The settling cellar is equipped with French oak wooden barrels, and Slavonian oak wooden vats containing either 5 or 20 hectolitres.

The bottled and labelled wines are stored on special shelves in climate controlled areas.

    The tasting room

The pleasure of personally tasting our wines with you allows us to share their story with you, thereby transforming them into ambassadors for our land.

This is why our winery is open all year round, and the panoramic Tasting Room and Terrace are open Monday-Friday from 9am-noon, and 2pm-6pm, and on Saturday mornings from 9am-noon.

The first Sunday of every month the Tasting Room is open from 10am-1pm.

    The vineyards

The winery is surrounded by 40 hectares of its own vineyards, each parcel having a specific name: Pernice, Raballa, Colombarola, Collinetta, Gerre, Fontana Barbera, Magnana, Gabà, Scuole and Fornace.

The vineyards belonging to the Tenuta Pernice winery are all listed with the Colli Piacentini d.o.c. registry, and thanks to their favourable exposure, include grape varietals which are traditional (Barbera, Bonarda, Ortrugo and Malvasia), as well as international (Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon).
